Chapter 9
Sui Dynasty
The dynasty after the collapse of the Han dynasty. Lasted from 589 to 618. They expanded the canal systems but were overthrow when the emperor tried to conquer Korea and failed.
Tang Dynasty
The dynasty that came after the Sui dynasty. Lasted from 618 to 907. It and the Song Dynasty (960 to 1270) were regarded as the golden age of arts and literature. The examination system was revived and was encouraged to do know that there were printed books.
Song Dynasty Economic Revolution
A period of time in the Song dynasty were China started to achieve many different things technologically and culturally such as a drought resistant rice grain.
Hangzhou
The capitol city of China during the Song dynasty.
Foot Binding
A cultural practice that was practiced in China were a young girls feet were tightly wrapped to prevent growth.
Tribute System
A system in which if you wanted to trade with China an do things with them, you would have to do a ritual were you say that you are inferior to China and that China is superior over everyone else.
Xiongnu
An early nomadic confederacy that was established during the Han dynasty. Their constant raids on northern China caused the Chinese emperor to make an agreement with them so that they would stop raiding them.
Khitan/Jurchen People
Jurchen People: A group of people that conquered and lived in Northern China (1115 to 1234).

Khitan People: A group of nomadic people that conquered parts of China and parts of the steppes (907 to 1125) when the state fell apart in the north. Both Khitan and Jurchen people required the people of the Song dynasty father south to deliver goods.

A distinct set of values developed by the samurai. Also known as the way of the warrior.
Chinese Buddhism
The transformation of Buddhism to fit in Chinese culture. Was mainly in its Mahayana form.
Emperor Wendi
An emperor of the Sui dynasty that broadly supported the new Chinese Buddhism religion.
