Chapter 21
World War I
The first World War. Started in Europe in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir of the Austria-Hungry Empire, by the Black Hand, terrorist group of Serbians trying to make Serbia stronger. This caused Germany, Austria-Hungry, and Italy (Triple Alliance) to team up against Britain, France, and Russia (Triple Entente). The war ended in 1918 with the Triple Entente winning the war.
Treaty of Versailles
The treaty that arose out of World War I that put multiple restrictions onto Germany.
Woodrow Wilson/Fourteen Points
14 different points proposed by President Wilson to try and make world peace.
Great Depression
The collapse of the world economy, lasting from 1929 to 1942.
New Deal
A proposal created by President Franklin Roosevelt to help combat the Great Depression by creating jobs to try and kick start the economy.
Fascism
A new type of government system were the government was ruled by a single leader and sought to "revitalize and purify the nation and to mobilize its people for some grand task." It also didn't accept other government systems due to their views that it weakened a country.
Mussolini
The fascist leader of Italy that ruled from 1922 to 1945. Allied with Nazi Germany in World War II.
Nazi Germany/Hitler
The period of time in which Adolf Hitler ruled over Germany between 1933 and 1945 were the Nazi party ruled over the government.
Revolutionary Right (Japan)
A movement in Japan that started when the Great Depression hit Japan. It sought to have an emperor rule instead of a parliament, have extreme nationalism, and favoring expansion.
World War II in Asia
The start of World War II in Asia were Japan started to invade and conquer Asia and the Pacific Ocean islands.
World War II in Europe
The start of World War II in Europe with Germany invading and conquering the area around it.
Total War
A war in which everything that a country has is devoted to war against other countries.
Holocaust
Genocide committed by the Germans during World War II against anyone who was undesirable or dangerous (ex: Jews, Gypies, communist,...) and were put into concentration or death camps, were they were slaughtered.
Marshall Plan
A proposal made by the United States to help Europe recover from World War II. Forced countries to get along.
European Economic Community
A group of countries were the members reduced fees on trade and developed the common policy for trade.
N.A.T.O (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
A organization that committed the United States to protect Western Europe from the Soviet Union.
