Steam Engine
An engine in which steam is made to move pistons that turn into mechanical energy to power what ever the engine is connected to.
Indian cotton textiles
Cotton fabric made in India and was a major trading source with Britain.
British Royal Society
An organization established in 1660 to find the latest scientific knowledge and later published them in "mechanics' libraries".
Middle-class values
Values that the middle class had such as hard work, respectability, and thrift.
Lower Middle-class
People who were employed in the service section of the work force such as police and clerks.
Karl Marx
A German socialist that created one of the many views of socialism and through that history was made by conflicts between rich and poor classes.
Labour Party
A political party in Britain created by the working classes.
Proletariat
A working class men.
Socialism in the United States
Socialism did not appeal to United States workers as much as in Europe and only formed small parts of America.
Progressives
A political party that was very successful in the early 1900's and "pushed special reform, such as wages-and-hours legislation, better sanitation, antitrust laws, and greater governmental intervention in the economy."
Russian Revolution of 1905
An uprising in Russia that forces the leader of Russia to change some things in the government of Russia and limit his or her power over the people.
Caudillos
Violent military strongmen.
Latin American Export Boom
A rapid increase in the amount of items exported from Latin America.
Mexican Revolution
A revolution in Mexico (that started in 1910 and ended in 1920) which peasants sought to overthrow the dictator Porfirio Diaz and later created a constitution in 1917 that appealed the peasants.
Dependent Development
A form of economical growth where the different countries depended on others to make profits.
